Politicians who are elected to serve at any level of government should not engage in double standard or hypocritical behavior. Doing so creates controversy, divisiveness, a climate of mistrust, anti-establishment rhetoric, and more hatred. The GOP more than the Democrats are guilty of this. For example, 100 GOP lawmakers have demanded that Professor Click be fired from the University Missouri for her role in the campus protest last November.
Click a female assistant professor, received nationwide attention after a video captured her and another female staff member attempting to intimidate student journalists during the campus protest.
The 100 House members and 18 state senators signed letters to top administrators of the University of Missouri System and its flagship campus in Columbia, charging communication assistant professor Melissa Click “failed to meet the obligations she has to her supervisors, fellow professors, University students, and the taxpayers of Missouri” when she called for “muscle” to help her remove a student journalist from the protest site.
What Professor Click did should not be condoned, as it was a violation of the First Amendment – Freedom of Speech. To call for her firing while ignoring other blatant and egregious situations where laws are broken is clearly a double standard and hypocritical.
Currently, the situation in Oregon where armed men have taken over a federal building provides an example of double standards and hypocrisy. The group is occupying part of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns in support of Dwight and Steven Hammond, father-and-son ranchers who were convicted of arson. The Hammonds and the gunmen are in conflict with federal laws yet we have not heard a GOP politician condemning this as being illegal and unacceptable. You can imagine what would happen if it was armed black men doing this.
Another example that is even more comparable to professor’s Click case is that involving Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) threatened to break a NY-1 reporter in half and throw him off a balcony. Grimm’s outrageous behavior was captured on camera over a year ago. Not one Republican politician at the time called for Grimm’s resignation. s speaking out when one of their own, Rep Grimm, threatened throw him off the balcony
The double standards and hypocrisy is not new for the GOP as they have demonstrated such behaviour against President Obama’s administration and even the president himself. Take for example, Donald Trump (the current front runner in the GOP presidential candidate race) who promoted the Birther conspiracy against the president. No GOP politician condemned Trump for his divisive and hate mongering bahavior.
At some point you would expect that the GOP to come to some recognition that their double standards and hypocrisy is not good for the country. It is not good because it can encourage anarchy. At a time when America needs to be united against threats from external terrorist group like ISIS such behavior does not encourage unity. Any politician who promotes double standard and hypocrisy is not worthy of the office they hold.
